The Black Hills is an isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming, United States. Black Elk Peak, which rises to 7,244 feet, is the range's highest summit. The most common way to ascend the peak is Trail No. 9, which begins by Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park. The peak also features a stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. That the tower remains is a testament to not only the quality of craftsmanship, but the work that went in to its construction. The stone, cement and sand were hauled up more than three miles by carts pulled by horses and mules. Although the fire tower was decommissioned in 1967, it’s still a welcome vision for hikers that make the trip to Black Elk Peak.
